Wimborne Young Artist of the Year 2024 Join us at the launch weekend

We will be launching our competition at Badbury Rings on the 13th-14th of July in collaboration with the Kingston Lacy’s Festival of Archaeology.

Artists and visitors can join in the fun this coming weekend with Kingston Lacy’s Festival of Archaeology and the many events going on all weekend at Badbury Rings.

Spend the weekend roaming around this Iron Age hill fort, exploring the hundreds of acres steeped in ancient history. Channel the ancient crafts of the Durotriges and the Romans who settled there in a town called Vindocladia.

During the weekend, Otter Gallery will be based on the ancient hill fort where young artists can interpret the theme by capturing the concentric rings, towering trees, flora and fauna and expansive landscapes. The possibilities are endless. Work created on the weekend can be left with us on the day and used as your entry into ‘Wimborne’s Young Artist of The Year’ or/ take it back with you and finish it off at home, as you have the long summer holidays to perfect your entry.

Get the whole family involved and enjoy plenty of fun activities all weekend, from guided walks with a National Trust archaeologist and ranger to learning how to wattle and daub and discovering the Roundhouse. Scratch beneath the surface and immerse yourself in the once-thriving community of this ancient hill fort.

Saturday 13 July, 10am and 1.30pm – join National Trust Archaeologist, Martin Papworth for a two hour walk of Badbury Rings. £10 per person. Pre-booking is essential. See separate event listing for online bookings or telephone 0344 249 1895.

Sunday 14 July, 10am and 1.30pm – join National Trust Ranger, Luke Dawson, for a 45-minute introductory walk of Badbury Rings to understand its significance for archaeology and nature. After this you will join Ari Samadder, Collections Assistant, to explore how Badbury Rings fits with hill forts around the world. Free, offered on a first come, first served basis on the day.

Join Nance Grace, Archaeologist, to discover more about the history of Badbury Rings and explore some of the items which can be unearthed during archaeological digs. • Have a go at wattle and daub – getting a taste for how some of the original buildings at Badbury Rings would have been made. • Discover the location and style of a roundhouse. • And more family friendly activities.
