Young Artist of the Year 2023

Announcing an art competition for all budding young artists under the age of 16!

With some amazing prizes on offer including a first prize trophy with Pegasus Art vouchers and hundreds of pounds worth of Winsor & Newton materials, Otter Gallery are encouraging all young artists up to the age of 16 to enter this exciting competition!

On the theme, ‘Nature’s Canvas; capturing the beauty of the outdoors’ you’ll have the long Summer holiday to perfect your entry. Split into three age categories (under 7’s, 8 – 12 years and 13 – 16 years) artists can interpret the theme by capturing urban landscapes, back gardens, seascapes from home or abroad, lakes, flowers…..the possibilities are endless.

Young Artist of the Yer 2023

‘Paint what makes you happy!’ says Katie Bourne, owner of the new Otter Gallery in Mill Lane. ‘My sons are both really creative and the idea of exhibiting their work in a proper gallery was really exciting for them – that gave me the impetus to launch this competition.’

And so, the idea for Young Artist of the Year was born. The ethos of the Otter Gallery was an inclusive one from the outset. Determined not to be remotely elitist, Katie and her team welcome art lovers of all ages, dogs of their art loving owners and children too. The daughter of an artist herself, she grew up in and around the studio, making regular trips to art galleries and exhibitions. This legacy continues with Katie’s own sons, both of whom possess creative flair and a keen interest in the gallery. They are even involved in the competition itself, supporting the gallery with entries and possibly judging.

The really exciting news is that all shortlisted entries will have the chance to exhibit their works in the gallery from 31st August to 2nd September, complete with a Prize Giving! Inspiring a whole new generation of creatives is a privilege that Bourne relishes, ‘creating this opportunity for young artists is really important to me.’
